Why does every bike lane become a culture war? Must urban change always have winners and losers?
In this CITYMAKERS PechaKucha style evening, leading urban changemakers challenge the fear and ideology that too often surround the transformation of our cities. Through a series of rapid-fire talks and an open discussion, they will reveal how advocacy, education and compelling communication can turn conflict into common purpose — and how architecture centres, city architects, strategic city institutes and NGOs can help professionals and the public alike embrace greener, healthier and more liveable urban futures.

Peter Murray was the Co-Founder of NLA (London’s equivalent to TU-BA) and Founder of the London Festival of Architecture. He trained as an architect but has spent his career as a writer and curator. He was a Design Advisor to two Mayors of London and is now planning to stand as Mayor himself in 2028 on a platform of liveability and delivery.
Philippa Borrowman (UK)
She lives in London, where she works as an Executive Programme Manager at the Clean Cities organization and is dedicated to supporting the transition to cleaner and more sustainable urban mobility. She is an expert in transport and climate campaigns with extensive experience in developing and implementing campaigns and advocacy activities focused on sustainable transport, air quality, and urban decarbonization.
In the past, Philippa worked on transport policy at London’s City Hall, where she led complex policy initiatives and collaborated closely with the Mayor’s Office, Transport for London, and a wide range of partners and stakeholders.
Štěpán Bärtl (CZE)
Head of Center for Architecture and Metropolitan Planning (CAMP)
Štěpán is a cultural manager and co-founder of the Center for Architecture and Metropolitan Planning (CAMP) in Prague. He focuses on ways to connect experts with the general public and how to encourage residents’ interest in the environment in which they live.
Since 2014, he has been working at the Institute of Planning and Development, where he has led CAMP—a multimedia gallery and community hub focused on the future of cities—since 2017. Thanks to its clear focus on the general public, CAMP is one of the most prominent centers of its kind in the world.
He is a board member of the Association of Architecture Organizations (AAO), which brings together architectural organizations in the USA and Europe.
He studied at the Institute of International Studies at Charles University and at the School of Economics and Management in Lund, Sweden.
Petra Marko (SK)
CEO, Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava (MIB); Founder, TU-BA centre for architecture and city planning.
Petra Marko is an architect and placemaking expert dedicated to people-centric cities. She serves as CEO of the Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava (MIB), driving strategic urban planning and participatory placemaking initiatives to enhance quality of life. She’s known for leading a placemaking practice in London, teaching at London School of Architecture and her involvement on UK’s National Infrastructure Commission’s panel. As part of her role at Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava (MIB), she spearheaded the establishment of TU-BA, Bratislava’s first centre for architecture and city planning which serves as a platform for dialogue and active participation.
