The history of the Roma people is not always seen as part of our shared past, leaving “white spots” — unknown places — in our collective memory. One of them is the pogrom that took place in 1928 in the village of Pobedim. The documentary White Spots highlights the process of coming to terms with history by following the effort to create a memorial to commemorate this tragic event. However, a suitable location for the monument has yet to be found. After the screening, a discussion will follow on how society deals with difficult chapters of its history. The film explores the attempt to establish a memorial for the 1928 pogrom against the Roma, which still has not been installed anywhere. This story opens a broader question — why do we remember some events and not others? In the discussion, we will look at Bratislava’s own “white spots” — places lacking memorials and the ways we address uncomfortable topics from the past. We will talk about what is being done to symbolically fill these gaps, from memorial brass plaques on sidewalks to the restoration of forgotten buildings.
