Housing for Community, Play and Local Life.
How can housing and neighbourhood design nurture intergenerational connection, everyday play, and independence for children as active citizens of their own streets?
Cany Ash is a thought leader in neighbourhood design and urban regeneration, with a career spanning decades and co‑founding the award‑winning London‑based architecture studio Ash Sakula, known for community‑focused, sustainable housing and neighbourhood design rooted in local life and everyday experiences.

In this talk, Cany will explore innovative community housing models that promote intergenerational living, support care and play, and give children real agency in shaping their environments. Drawing on Ash Sakula’s rich portfolio — from The Malings, a riverside neighbourhood that won the Housing Design Awards Supreme Winner, to work on Profitable Neighbourhoods, a typology that doubles density while creating safe streets and convivial public life — she will unpack how close‑knit, mixed‑tenure streets with homes that open onto shared spaces can encourage community interaction, local economies, and environments where children can play, explore and connect with neighbours.
She’ll share insights on embedding these principles into planning and design — showing how architecture and urbanism can strengthen social bonds.
