Melissa and Chris Bruntlett, authors of Women Changing Cities, explore how women leaders are reshaping cities to be safer and more welcoming for children – and therefore better for everyone.
Drawing on stories from cities such as Paris and Bogotá, they highlight initiatives like school streets, protected bike lanes, traffic calming, and accessible public spaces that support children’s independence and everyday mobility.
A central theme of the talk is why gender matters in urban planning—and how cities designed with women’s experiences in mind, including caregiving, safety, and daily trip patterns, ultimately create more inclusive, liveable environments for all residents.

The panel discussion will be joined by Simon Battisti, who leads the NGO Qendra Marrëdhënie in Tirana advancing school streets, and Petra Marko, Chief Executive of the Metropolitan INstitute of Bratislava, whose City for Children programme promotes safer streets and active childhoods. Together, they will explore how gender-responsive and child-friendly urban policies can be translated into practical local action.
Melissa & Chris Bruntlett are authors and urban mobility advocates who strive to communicate the benefits of sustainable transport and inspire happier, healthier, more human-scale cities.
